Child Sexual Assault

Sexual abuse of a child occurs when an adult exposes a child or youth to inappropriate sexual touching, activity or behaviour. It is estimated that in 96% of child sexual abuse cases, the child knows the abuser - and may live in the same household as them. And AASAS estimates that 29% of child sexual abuse victims are boys.

This Alberta Government webpage has information on child sexual abuse, as well as other ways that children can be abused. If you think that a child is being abused, you must report it. This webpage has information about the 24/7 Child Abuse Hotline.

Child Abuse Hotline:

1-800-387-5437  to get help if you, or children you know, are being neglected, abused, or sexually exploited.

Often, once a report of sexual abuse has been made, a child will be interviewed at one of Alberta's Child Centres.

In Red Deer there is the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre.

And in Edmonton, there is the Zebra Centre.

These centres have staff that are specially trained to help a child, and their family, navigate the process of recovery from the assault, and any court processes that there may be.

If your child has been sexually assaulted, there is help for you as the adult that is important in their life. Please reach out, so that you can be provided with the help and support that you may need to allow you to help your child.
